Snowy Egret...No. 43, Crossed Wing Collection

$6.00

Described as the bird that walks on golden slippers, the Snowy Egret was persecuted in this country not for its gold but its delicate plumage, used by the millinery trade to satisfy the vanity of a population environmentally ignorant and bankrupt or compassion for other living things. They avoided extinction because somehow, legislation was passed that protected remaining rookeries, and more importantly, fashion changed. Bellbottoms have returned, but thankfully, feathered hats have not.

Today these birds go about their business, doing what Snowy Egrets do, in relative security, to the delight of those of us who enjoy and appreciate birds. We've seen them numerous times, but the occasion that always comes to mind is of how novice birdwatchers, standing in awe before a pond in the Everglades, that pond teeming with waders - herons, spoonbills, ibis - and egrets. It was quite a thrill.

Luckly for them, we came to our senses before it was too late, and hopefully, they will grace wetland with their beauty for generations to come.
