From inside the front cover of the pattern book: The Last Supper is depicted as an emotionally involved occasion in which Christ unexpectedly announced a forthcoming betrayal against him by one of the Twelve Apostles seated at the table. The episode created an opportunity for the artist, Leonardo da Vinci, to create a highly dramatic scene with the portrayal of each guest's psychologically expressed response to Christ's pronouncement.
